Indicators and goals
Each of the 169 targets has one or more indicators to measure progress on that target. The total number of indicators is 230. The global indicator framework was developed by the Inter-Agency and Expert Group on SDG Indicators (IAEG-SDGs). It was agreed to, as a practical starting point at the 47th session of the UN Statistical Commission held in March 2016. The report of the Commission, which included the global indicator framework, was then taken note of by ECOSOC at its 70th session in June 2016. These indicators are a compromise between reliability and availability of data as well as relation to the target. They are far from perfect and subject to ongoing debates. Governments are supposed to develop their own set of specific targets which are meaningful in the context of a particular country and the challenges it is facing. Check if your Government has already started work on its indicators for SDG implementation.
More information from the UN website
UNEP has a slightly different understanding of which targets are linked to the environment. You can find a table comparing their classification with ours or you can go straight to their page.
The Statistics division of the UN has more details on which datasets feed into each separate indicator. You can find the datasets per indicator on this page.
